Integrated Design, Fabrication, and Data Analysis Microcredential
This hands-on, accelerated program is designed for those with experience in industrial manufacturing who want to gain in-demand skills for advanced manufacturing roles.

Delivered by colleges and institutes across the country, it covers essential topics in design, tool-pathing, and data analysis, equipping you for growth in this rapidly evolving field.
For a limited time, tuition is funded by Upskill Canada, powered by Palette Skills, and the Government of Canada, so you’ll only need to pay a small program fee of $200 once accepted.
- Hands-on, accelerated training: Quickly gain real-world experience in 2D/3D design, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and data-driven decision-making.
- Industry-relevant curriculum: Develop the specific skills that employers need, based on direct input from industry experts.
- Recognized certification: Receive a certificate from a leading Canadian college or institute, demonstrating your new competencies.
- Funded tuition: Access this program at a reduced cost, with only a small program fee to start.
By the end of this program, you will be able to:
- Develop and interpret digital designs: Create and analyze 2D and 3D designs for both additive (3D printing) and subtractive (CNC machining) manufacturing. You’ll also learn to accurately interpret technical drawings, and design for factors like efficiency and sustainability.
- Master tool-pathing for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM): Set up and simulate tool paths for 2D and 3D parts, adjusting parameters to boost precision and efficiency. You’ll explore advanced techniques, including high-speed and adaptive machining, to improve production quality and throughput.
- Optimize processes using data: Apply industry 4.0 principles to collect and analyze key performance indicators to monitor manufacturing processes, using insights to enhance productivity and minimize waste. You’ll build skills in data interpretation, report creation, and visualization, enabling you to communicate actionable insights effectively to stakeholders.
Additionally, this program will help you strengthen essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and leadership.
This microcredential is designed for those with manufacturing experience who want to stay current and deepen their technical skills.
Typical requirements:
- At least three years of work or volunteer experience in manufacturing.
- Digital literacy.
- Proficiency in either English or French (to be assessed by the college)
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
Admission criteria may vary by college, and some institutions offer Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR) for those with equivalent experience.
Industry advisors also recommend participants consider these competencies as indicators of potential success:
- Proficiency in using computers and basic software applications (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, internet browsing).
- Understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, including arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
- Familiarity with basic manufacturing concepts and terminology.
- Basic familiarity with blueprints and technical drawings and proficiency in using precision measurement tools.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for problem-solving and process optimization.
- Ability to work effectively in teams and communicate clearly with peers and supervisors.
- Awareness of, and some experience with, technological tools and software relevant to industrial design and manufacturing (e.g., CAD/CAM software).
- Ability to create and refine prototypes, with an understanding of design for manufacturability.
- A willingness to learn about new technologies and methodologies that enhance manufacturing processes.
- Timeframe: Approximately 112 hours over 16 weeks. The first 13 weeks include three hours of self-paced online content review with independent knowledge checks, two hours of live online lab sessions with instructions and guest speakers, and two hours for an independent applied learning activity. The last three assessment weeks involve seven hours of completing a comprehensive simulation or project to apply learning in real-world contexts.
